Lovers of fine Rioja will recognise the red berry fruits and oak character of this great value, award winning gem from Valencia. It’s been wowing wine judges for years, and was skilfully crafted by a winery regularly tipped by Spain’s top wine guide. 30 months in oak and 2 years of bottle age before release, Tempranillo based blend.
Appearance Good deep purple, intense for a wine with so much age
Tasting notes Silky strawberry, raspberry and plum with a hint of vanilla
Aroma Vibrant & fresh. Soft strawberry, raspberry and spice aromas
Where else can you buy mellow, barrel aged reds of such remarkable quality and price? Not only is today’s Spanish wine scene “among the most vibrant, dynamic and creative in the world” (Tim Atkin MW), it surely offers the best value. Valencia is known as Madrid-by-the-sea – Madrilenos flock there for relaxation. Inland there are orange groves and paddy fields – it’s where paella is said to have been invented – and, of course, vineyards. Winemaker Maria Angeles Camara selected hand harvested Tempranillo for this Gran Reserva, which was aged for 30 months in oak barrels. With its dark, juicy flavours and soft vanilla tones, this fragrant, medium bodied red is in its element with duck or lamb, strong cheese, or tapas such as jamón serrano.
