Ernesto Catena Vineyards Tikal Natural 2017 Argentina Red Wine 750 mL
Vinous 92 points – A blend of Malbec with 40% Syrah from Vistaflores, aged for eight months in 20% new oak, four-fifths French and one-fifth American. Bright purple in hue, it delivers aromas of red currant and raspberry plus hints of flesh and violet over an inviting mint note that is then followed by sweet spices kept in a pencil box. The palate is flavorsome, loose and sugary with a smooth, thirst-quenching fluidity..October/2020
Deep reddish purple with aromas of bright berry/cherry fruit. Big body yet very balanced with luscious layers of raspberry, cherry, and cocoa flavors. Just a hint of baking spice at the end brings it all together.
A great companion to barbeque or burgers, and incredibly easy to drink on its own.
Ernesto Catena spent his childhood in the vineyards of Mendoza learning from his father, Argentine winemaking pioneer Nicolás Catena. Tikal, named after the spiritual Mayan ruins in Guatemala, is also Ernesto’s son’s name. This is his personal project where vineyards are biodynamic. I met with Ernesto and his winemaker, Alejandro Kuschnarof,f to taste through their 2014 and 2015 wines. All their wines are Malbec-based blends.
