"The 2004 El Puntido was sourced from its namesake vineyard planted in 1975. The wine was aged in new French oak for 18 months. Purple-colored, it offers an expressive nose of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, black cherry, and blackberry. Firm and structured on the palate, this nicely balanced wine has ample spicy fruit but a slightly compressed finish. "The 2004 Insignia (the first to be 100% from the estate vineyards) is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. I had this wine several times in Napa, and it is a beauty. A flashy, exuberant style for Phelps, with dense ruby/purple color, a gorgeous nose of creme de cassis, incense, licorice, smoke, and spice, the wine has supple tannins, a flamboyant, full-bodied mouthfeel, and tremendous length. Despite its precociousness and up-front style, this wine should evolve easily for 20 or more years. There are 10,000 cases of the 2004." -Robert Parker

"The 2005 Termanthia received the 200% new oak treatment where it remained for 20 months. Opaque purple, the wine offers up plenty of toast, scorched earth, truffle, mineral, and assorted black fruits. Tightly wound and very backward, this powerful effort appears to be balanced but will need a decade of cellaring to become approachable. Not as much of a gamble as the Numanthia, it will require much patience by those who purchase it." -Jay Miller

Vivid red and dark berry aromas are complemented by dusty floral and mineral notes, with a suave rose quality gaining power with air. Deep cassis and bitter cherry flavors are energized by tangy minerality, picking up exotic floral pastille and candied licorice nuances on the back end. Smooth and sweet, with fine-grained tannins and a long, sappy finish. This is balanced to reward at least another five to seven years of patience."
