Alto Moncayo Alto Moncayo 2006
Not Discountable!

94 Points - Wine Advocate, June 2009
"The purple-colored 2006 Alto Moncayo was aged in new French and American oak for 17 months before bottling without filtration. It offers up a sexy concoction of toasty new oak, lavender, spice box, cassis, and black raspberry. Round, rich, and voluptuous on the palate, it delivers plenty of up-front pleasure but hides enough ripe tannin to evolve for a few years. It can be enjoyed now and over the next decade. The Alto Moncayo wines, from the up-and-coming DO of Campo de Borja, are produced from old-vine Garnacha with winemaking overseen by veteran vigneron Chris Ringland." -Jay Miller

92 Points - Wine Spectator, December 15, 2008
"This plush, dense red shows coffee and spicy oak, with berry and wild plum fruit and accents of licorice and black pepper. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, and this finishes warm and spicy. Modern and alluring. Drink now through 2012. 600 cases made." -TM

Alto Moncayo Veraton Garnacha 2007
92 Points - Wine Advocate, April 2010
"The entry-level 2007 Veraton is 100% estate-grown Garnacha aged for 17 months in new French and American oak before bottling without filtration. Deep crimson-colored, it has a sexy nose of smoke, spice box, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry that wafts from the glass. Full-bodied on the palate with layers of succulent red and black fruit, it is balanced, pure, and lengthy. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. The vocal low-alcohol crowd will have disdain for this wine; those who enjoy big, powerful, in-your-face wine will love it. Old vine Garnacha made under the supervision of renowned vigneron Chris Ringland is the story at Bodegas Alto Moncayo in the little known DO of Campo de Borja." -Jay Miller

92 Points - International Wine Cellar
"Opaque violet. Sexy aromas of red and dark berries, sandalwood, spice cake and fresh rose. Spicy, concentrated raspberry and blackberry flavors are given spine by zesty minerals and pick up a smoky quality with air. Impressively lively for such a rich wine, with strong finishing spiciness and lingering notes of licorice and red berries." -Josh Raynolds

Bodegas Ateca Atteca Armas 2006
92 Points - International Wine Cellar
"Vivid ruby. Energetic black raspberry and floral aromas are deepened by rooty sassafras and cola. Very spicy on the palate, which offers fresh black and blue fruit flavors, silky texture and gentle mineral lift. Seems more complex than the '05, surprisingly, and finishes with good lingering sweetness. I suspect that this will be best drunk before the '05. This winery is a partnership between Jumilla's Juan Gil family and importer Jorge Ordonez, and the wines are made by two young Australian winemakers, Iwo Jakimowica and Sarah Morris, who worked at Torbreck." -Josh Raynolds

Bodegas Ateca Atteca Garnacha Old Vines 2008
88 Points - Wine Advocate, April 2010
"The 2008 Atteca was sourced from even older vines, 80-120 years of age in this case. Deep crimson-colored, it offers up an enticing perfume of spice box, violets, and black cherry. Supple-textured with excellent depth and concentration and plenty of savory fruit, it lacks only complexity but, at this price, who’s complaining? Bodegas Ateca is a collaboration between the Gil family of Jumilla and importer Jorge Ordonez." -Jay Miller

Bodegas Ateca Garnacha de Fuego 2008
89 Points - Wine Advocate, June 2009
"The grapes for this new project were sourced from 60- to 80-year-old vines whose already low yields were reduced an additional 70% by the weather conditions of the vintage. A glass-coating opaque purple, remarkably deep for a wine of this price made from Garnacha, the wine offers a nose of brooding black cherry and blueberry. Concentrated, ripe, and balanced on the palate, this flavorful, lengthy effort will drink well over the next four years. It is an outstanding value." -Jay Miller

Bodegas Borsao Crianza Seleccion 2006
89 Points - Wine Advocate, August 2008
"The 2006 Crianza Seleccion is purple-colored with a fragrant nose of cedar, spice box, black cherry, and black currant. Smooth-textured, savory, and ripe, it has excellent depth, concentration, and length. It will evolve for 2-3 years and be at its best from 2010 to 2016." -Jay Miller

90 Points - International Wine Cellar
"Blackberry and blueberry aromas are complicated by incense and dried flowers. Juicy dark berry flavors are liqueur-like in richness, with nervy minerality adding energy. Becomes fleshier and sweeter on the finish, which echoes the floral note." -Josh Raynolds

Tres Picos Garnacha 2008
91 Points - Wine Advocate, April 2010
"The flagship of this portfolio is the perennially outstanding Tres Picos. The 2008 Tres Picos is 100% Garnacha old vines in which 50% was aged in tank and 50% in French oak for 10 months. It gives up a compelling nose of black cherry fruit that jumps from the glass along with earth and mineral notes. Plush on the palate bordering on voluptuous, this pleasure-bent, full-flavored effort will drink well for another 3-4 years although few will be able to resist its charms for that long. Bodegas Borsao has long been known for high quality value-priced wines and the current releases are no exception." -Jay Miller
